Youth

Global Youth Action continues to be run by GLADE.  It was developed during a national project co-ordinated by the Development Education Association (DEA) and funded by the Big Lottery Fund and 'V'.

Youth Work

Our GYA team is able to provide support to anyone interested in global youth work. Our flexible youth-led approach includes:

  • one-off interactive workshops on specific issues ( e.g., fashion, food, climate change, waste minimisation, rights of the child etc.)
  • on-going projects that explore a chosen issue & take action  (e.g., song writing & recording, making an exhibition, running a campaign.)
  • good resources (posters, info packs, artefacts, CDs, maps…) & contacts
  • training for youth workers

We work alongside youth workers to provide appropriate support in any given setting - from detached and drop-in youth work to focus groups.

Youth workers are invited to GLADE’s

in-house Global Youth Work training days as well as learning from ‘on the job’ training.

Global Bites

Global Bites are practical, fun workshops for young people from 8+ years that explore global issues.  They are ideal in informal settings, such as drop-in youth clubs, after-school clubs and uniformed groups, and are tailored to engage young people from all backgrounds and abilities.

  • Whole World Cake – explore local/global interdependence by using a range of ingredients to bake cakes!
  • Not just a Soap Opera – watch a Kenyan soap opera full of romance, comedy and corruption to explore shared issues between life in the UK and Kenya
  • Fashion Fun – learn about where your clothes come from and who produced them.  Get creative and re-vamp your wardrobe!
  • Water Challenge – play games and activities that explore global water scarcity and learn how to be resourceful by making your own water feature with a difference.
  • Go Bananas – interactive games get you thinking about banana production and how fair trade can benefit the lives of banana producers.  Try out making your own banana smoothie.

 Connect!

Get Asking Questions!

We run short, exciting sessions that introduce a particular issue (e.g., gun crime, fashion industry, fair trade, ethical tourism, rights of the child, diversity, waste & recycling etc) and make the connections between the personal , local and global dimensions of the issue. These ‘Global Bites’ are interactive activities that get you thinking and talking about global issues.

Challenge!

Activate with Music, Art and Drama

Some groups want to take it further and develop a full project. You work together to get more information and plan events and activities to tackle your chosen issue. There is also money available to bring in external expertise such as video, music and drama specialists to help explore the issue further.

Change!

You take action

Join a campaign; host an event; raise money for a charity; start a radio show etc.

Everybody involved gets a chance to reflect, learn and gain accreditation from the work they do. You also find out about further opportunities within and beyond the project.
