 GLADE has a wide range of exciting and inspiring classroom workshops and INSET .  

We offer classroom workshops  for Foundation Stage to Key Stage 4 and beyond.  We engage the students' interest through exciting artefacts they can touch and use, photographs which give a vivid picture of other people's lives, stories, music and a whole host of active learning methods.  read more …..;

  • Bead making - a design & make activity using beading techniques from Ghana.
  • Block printing -  a design & print workshop using techniques  from Ghana or India.
  • Tie dye - use techniques from Gambia and across the world.
  • Galimotos - learn how to make wire cars & other toys from across Africa.
  • Rangoli - create traditional folk art patterns and designs as used in India.
  • Whole world cake - a practical activity that investigates the origins of ingredients used in cake making
  • Rights of the Child – activities to enable pupils to find out about their rights and responsibilities

World in Our Backyard KS2-3 – whole day activity. Pupils investigate everyday items imported from overseas to find out about the work involved in their production and learn to empathise with the people who grow or manufacture them.

 

Cocoa & Chocolate KS3 & above – 2 hrs minimum for up to 40 pupils – large space needed.  An exciting simulation game exploring cocoa trading and the stories behind a bar of chocolate in West Africa.

Banana Trade KS3 & above – 2 hrs minimum for up to 40 pupils – large space needed. A fascinating simulation game exploring the banana trade chain in which Caribbean Banana farmers compete with multi-nationals for banana exports. 

Story behindchoose one from…chocolate, bananas, footballs, clothes, tea, coffee.  FS; KS1-4 – workshops 40 – 90 minutes. Suitable for whole day focus for school councils.  Brings alive the people stories behind familiar everyday items.

 

 

Whole World Cake  KS2 & above 2 hrs min. Practical cake making workshop to investigate the origins of ingredients. D&T skills include dis-assembly, tracing a product's origins, product design, taste-testing, food science, modifying recipes, and food production chains.  Global issues include food miles, local trade, Fairtrade, trade chains. Small charge for materials.

 

 

Day in a lifeGhana, India, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zambia etc.  Duration of workshop varies with Key Stage. Investigate life in another country through ‘A day in the life’ of a child. Uses photos, information cards and questions to make comparisons with the daily lives of your pupils.

African Continent through Poetry Y9 & above – 90 minutes – half day in class sizes. The workshop includes a launch assembly to provide inspiration and a context for creative writing, interpretation and mini debates. Stories, poetry and the daily life of young people and their families from Ghana, Gambia, South Africa, Kenya are used as the focus for the workshop.

 

Trading Trainers KS3 & above – 2 hrs minimum for up to 40 pupils. A large space is needed such as a school hall or drama studio. This exciting simulation game – 'Trading Trainers' – is used as a stimulus for pupils to investigate issues surrounding child labour in Peru. Pupils act out the role of a family making trainers for export. * Good for Fairtrade fortnight.

 

The Fire Children   Duration of workshop varies with Key Stage. A West African Creation story is used to explore child rights and the UN convention on the Rights of the Child. Pupils consider wants & needs & how child rights run parallel to the responsibilities your school promotes.

 

Passion for Fashion KS3 & above – Half day or whole day options for one group of pupils (good for D&T textiles).  Pupils find out about the clothing industry and how they can swap to buying fair trade clothes. Practical design & make activity to bring in clothes to swap or revamp.

 

Number the World  FS, KS1-2 – a series of 40 to 60 min workshops per class. An activity-filled workshop finding out how numbers, number patterns and stories involving number are common to most cultures around the world.

 

Rights Respecting Global Citizens

 

Training Course for Rights-Respecting Schools and Schools engaged in Children’s Rights work in Somerset

Global Crafts Workshops – lots of choice!

 

Seven Foundation Stage (FS); KS1-4 Workshops to choose from. 40 – 90 minutes depending on age. Small additional charge for materials

 

Adinka Printing from Ghana – A practical design and make printing activity in the context of daily life in Ghana where symbols play an important part in the printing techniques used.

 

Appliqué inspired by flags of the Fante people of West Africa. 

 

Tie dye from the Gambia – Pupils discover how to form intricate patterns in this practical workshop, and look at the daily life of women involved in tie dying.

 

Wire Toy Making – The workshop explores wire toy making, taking its inspiration from examples across the African continent.  Upper KS2 & above.  *Good for D&T RM.

 

 

 

Bead Making – This practical design and make workshop includes activities which explore bead making in the context of the daily life of people in West Africa. It emphasises re-cycling.

Block Printing from across India & Bangladesh - Repeat patterns and borders form the basis for this practical design and make printing workshop. Activities explore the daily lives of people involved in printing.

RangoliCreate traditional folk art patterns and designs drawing inspiration from India.  Activities are included that put these designs in the context of everyday life in India.

 

End of school Assembly linked with 90 minute teacher INSET (£150)

The Fire Children All key stages including 6th form. This West African creation story leads to thinking about child rights. The INSET looks at Child rights through the curriculum and the “Rights Respecting School”, UNICEF Award.

A journey through the Art of Ghana Key stages 2-5  - Photos, artefacts and fabrics take pupils on a journey through everyday life in Ghana.  The INSET looks at how to use GLADE's Ghana Collection (see over) to inspire & engage pupils – and for inspiration for your own teaching.

Before you finish your breakfast All key stages. The INSET looks at Fairtrade & trade justice in the context of the everyday items we use. It emphasises global interdependence and the extent to which we depend on imports from over half the world for a typical breakfast!.

Story behind…a bar of chocolate / bananas /tea/coffee/ footballs / clothing All key stages – The INSET looks at Fairtrade & trade justice in the context of Interdependence through everyday items. Includes an introduction to a Fairtrade School Award.

Costs:-

Classroom workshops are priced at £350 non-members / £300 GLADE members for a series of workshops lasting a day. 

Half day classroom workshops are available at £250 non-members /£200 GLADE members. 

 

INSET & training courses are available for whole school, curriculum focus or small groups, including Governors & HLTAs /TAs . 

Whole day INSET run at your school £350 non-members / £300 GLADE members. 

Twilight INSET is available at £150.  Reductions are given for a series of 3 or more twilight INSET.
